Biography
Luis Martínez-Fernández is a frequently quoted historian, author, public speaker and educator on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Lima, Peru and San Juan, Puerto Rico, he holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in History from the University of Puerto Rico and a Ph.D. in History from Duke University.
Martínez-Fernández has served as trustee of the College Board and currently serves on the board of the National Council for History Education. From 2020-23, he wrote a weekly nationally syndicated column for Creators Syndicate. He is recognized as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in the field of Caribbean Studies. He has published several books, including Revolutionary Cuba: A History, and edited an award-winning encyclopedia of Cuba. His publications include articles in Cuban Studies, Slavery and Abolition, Latin American Research Review, The Americas, Caribbean Studies, History Today, and in numerous anthologies and edited volumes.
