Biography

Sergio Alvarez is an economist specializing in the economic value of natural resources and ecosystem services, including tourism, recreation, and protection from natural and human-made hazards. He is a faculty member of the Sustainable Coastal Systems Cluster at the University of Central Florida, where he integrates science and societal needs to address coastal challenges and teaches conservation and resource management.

He holds a B.A. in Environmental Sciences and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida. His research covers sustainable tourism, marine resource economics, the impacts of hazards on socio-ecological systems, and the valuation of ecosystem services. With expertise in econometrics, statistics, optimization, and survey research, Sergio applies a data-driven approach to environmental and economic issues.
