UCF golfer Greg Eason advanced to the Round of 32 at the United States Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Knights’ Ricardo Gouveia dropped his match and was eliminated from the tournament.
Eason defeated Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif., who is a senior on the University of California squad and was runner-up at the 2012 U.S. Amateur. Eason took the match 3 & 2. He will advance to the Round of 32 and tee off at 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Thursday could potentially be a busy day for Eason, as the Round of 16 will be held that afternoon.
Gouveia went back and forth with his opponent, Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village, Calif., who also plays for Cal. After 18 rounds, Gouveia and Hagy were all square. But Hagy took the 19th hole to win the match and eliminate Gouveia, who had advanced to the quarterfinals of last year’s U.S. Amateur.
In the U.S. Amateur, two days of stroke play qualifying determine the 64 players who will advance to match play. From there, players are seeded according to their stroke play finish and the match-play bracket is determined.
