The seventh annual “Women and Leadership: a Global Perspective” forum will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at UCF.
The program, hosted by the UCF Global Perspectives Office, will focus on “Taking It to the Next Level.” In line with Global Perspectives’ 2013-2014 program theme, “What is Global is Local,” the forum will feature accomplished women who are locally and globally recognized. The event will be in the Key West Ballroom of the UCF Student Union from 3 to 5 p.m.
The forum will include introductory remarks by UCF Women’s Studies Program director M.C. Santana; local lessons from Melissa Westbrook, Student Government Association president, and a keynote presentation by journalist Irin Carmon.
Carmon is an Israeli-American journalist and commentator who focuses on women, politics and culture. She was named one of Forbes’ “30 under 30” in media and is also featured as a face of young feminism in New York magazine. She is a reporter for MSNBC.com and contributes articles to different publications such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The Jerusalem Post.
Westbrook plans to graduate with a dual degree of Health Sciences Pre-Clinical and Biology, with a minor in International & Global Studies. She has held a number of leadership positions.
In addition to Global Perspectives, cosponsors and partners of the event include the UCF Student Government Association, UCF Burnett Honors College, UCF Women’s Studies Program, UCF Diplomacy Program, UCF Global Peace and Security Studies Program, the Chastang Charitable Foundation, UCF Center for the Success of Women Faculty, UCF Political Science Department, UCF LIFE and the Global Connections Foundation.
