UCF track and field’s Sonnisha Williams capped her memorable junior year as a silver medalist in the long jump at the NACAC U-23 Championships on Sunday.
Williams improved on each of her first three attempts, leaping to a mark of 6.17m/20-3. She was narrowly edged out for gold by Arizona State’s Christabel Nettey, who represented Canada with a first-place finish of 6.18m/20-3.50.
Along with sprinters Aurieyall Scott and Octavious Freeman, Williams helped the Knights to a total of five medals during their time in Mexico. Prior to the meet, no UCF athlete had ever attended the championships.
Williams finished the 2012 season as a USA Olympic Trials qualifier with two All-America honors and two school records to her credit.
