The story focused on the economy and how it is impacting college students. It also showcased UCF’s pantry as a national model. The UCF program, which students started as a class project in the Student Union in 2009, has grown to more than 900 square feet in Ferrell Commons. The pantry has dozens of volunteers and several partners across the university, such as the Theatre Department, UCF Alumni Association and Nicholson School of Communication, have held food drives to stock its shelves.
The Alumni Association collected 3,266 pounds of food for the pantry just before Thanksgiving — the week the NBC crew was on campus. It is the largest donation made to the pantry to date.
