Learn how sexual assault and consent are defined in a court of law during a mock trial that explores the differences between consensual sex and rape.
UCF Victim Services and UCF Student Legal Services are co-sponsoring the mock trial, which will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the Cape Florida Ballroom of the Student Union. The event is free and open to the public, and a sign language interpreter will be present.
One in five women are sexually assaulted in college, and most often it’s done by someone she knows. Men, too, experience and are victims of sexual assault, although it occurs less often. That’s why it is important for students to be informed about boundaries, organizers say.
Attendees will provided a firsthand look at how sexual assault cases are prosecuted, and they also will be given the opportunity to act out in different roles during the trial.
The trial will feature testimony, cross-examinations and instructions from the judge. A jury will complete an online survey to make the decision.
