An exhibition and lecture series about Caribbean art will be featured Sept. 5-27 at the UCF Art Gallery. The vibrant show has been curated with a multicultural focus that seeks to link the diverse populations of Florida and the Caribbean.

The show, Caribbean Expressions: Art, Life & Culture, will showcase artists such as Wilson Bigaud, Préfète Duffaut, Prospere Pierre-Louis, Mallica “Kapo” Reynolds, Everald Brown and Wifredo Lam, whose works include the festive colors and bold figures in paintings, sculpture and prints.

The artworks are from the Bryant Collection, the Shoemaker Collection and the General Library Collection, all on loan from UCF Libraries Special Collections, as well as works from the private collection of artist Edouard Duval Carrié.

An opening reception for the show will be 6-8 p.m. Sept. 5.

Speaking at the lecture series about Caribbean art are:

  • 4 p.m., Sept. 11 – Dr. Kevin Meehan, University of Central Florida, Historical Consciousness in Haitian Painting
  • 1 p.m., Sept. 20 – Dr. Ilenia Colón Mendoza, University of Central Florida, The Caribbean-ness of Caribbean Art
  • 6 p.m., Sept. 26 – Dr. Paul Niell, Florida State University, Ritual Space and Afro-Cuban Modernity at the Sanctuary of Regla, Cuba

    • UCF Gallery, in the Visual Arts Building, is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is no admission charge.
