UCF guard Zykira Lewis was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team on Thursday. She was unanimously selected for the honor by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
“My teammates helped me earn this award,” Lewis said. “They push me to do my best. I hope I can help us get better and just try to get a win tomorrow when we start the tournament.”
Lewis is the Knights’ leading scorer and one of three rookies in the American who boasts a double-digit scoring average this season with 12.5 points per game. She has caught fire over the last month, netting three 20-point performances since Feb. 11.
Heading into this weekend’s inaugural championship, the Bartow, Fla., native has strung together eight-straight double-digit games to match her best stretch of the season. Of those eight games, she has paced the Knights in scoring in each of the previous six.
Lewis is one of eight rookies to be recognized as the American’s Freshman of the Week this year, having earned the distinction on Nov. 25.
The Knights are set to face Cincinnati in first-round action Friday, which will broadcast on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. ET. The winner will advance to meet undefeated and top-ranked UConn on Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
