00:07
hi everyone my name is Courtney moody
00:11
and I am class of 2020 UCF online alumna
00:15
from the English Creative Writing
00:17
Program and I am joined here today by
00:21
Joan Seder who is from the UCF online
00:24
Connect Center and she is the director
00:26
of student coaching and we are going to
00:29
talk a little bit today about what
00:31
student coaching is and how it can
00:33
benefit you UCF online students so first
00:38
of all thank you so much Joanie for
00:39
being with us today
00:40
for representing UCF online can you just
00:43
start us off by telling us a little bit
00:45
about what you do as the director of
00:47
student coaching yeah absolutely so I
00:52
really helped design the coaching
00:55
program that we use as far as how we’ve
00:58
laid it out for our unit and how we
01:01
support our students so I have a team of
01:05
Student Success coaches that are working
01:08
with all of our UCF online students and
01:10
I help provide the coaching to them that
01:14
they in turn then integrate into their
01:17
coaching with the students so it’s a
01:19
combination of handling the operations
01:22
of our center and constantly staying on
01:25
top of partnership with our programs
01:27
that we support and coaching my my stuff
01:31
essentially so in your experience well
01:35
and even outside of UCF you have
01:38
experience from other places and from
01:40
UCF too what differences have you
01:43
noticed this between students that do
01:46
take advantage of coaching and those
01:48
that don’t
01:49
is there a difference there mmm-hmm
01:51
there definitely is this is actually my
01:54
third institution I’ve worked with
01:57
student success coaching I feel like I
02:00
started this more than 10 years ago when
02:03
it was sort of becoming something new
02:05
and I’ve seen it evolve over time but
02:08
one thing that hasn’t changed is that
02:10
students who receive coaching support
02:13
whether they realize are receiving it or
02:15
not are more empowered and so a lot of
02:20
people misunderstand that coaching is
02:22
hand-holding and being there to tell
02:24
students what to do every step of the
02:26
way so they don’t learn how to do things
02:28
on their own but it’s actually the
02:30
opposite of that it’s actually taking a
02:32
big decision a lot of decisions that
02:35
happen along the way and helping
02:38
students break things down so that they
02:40
can be more organized effective with
02:43
their time understand what their options
02:46
are and what potential challenges may
02:48
come up as before they even come to them
02:51
so that they can be prepared and
02:53
students who receive this type of
02:55
support and and receive feedback from
02:59
coaches who have experience find that
03:03
they’re more prepared to deal with
03:05
things as they come up they’re less
03:07
surprised they’ve put good habits into
03:10
place to help them you know feel less
03:14
stressed and less overwhelmed with
03:16
adding school into their life and they
03:18
retain better a lot of people may feel
03:21
that student coaching is like
03:24
hand-holding or having things done for
03:26
them I think that’s a big perception and
03:28
because of that a lot of online students
03:31
feel like they’re self-sufficient
03:32
because we have to be because you’re
03:35
doing your online coursework but you
03:38
don’t have a professor right there
03:39
making you do the work you don’t have
03:42
other classmates there to help push you
03:45
along you have to be the one you are
03:47
accountable and I think because of that
03:49
they students often write off student
03:51
coaching and say well why do I need that
03:53
I can do all this on my own
03:55
so if a student is feeling self
03:57
sufficient why should they still reach
03:59
out to a success coach how can that
04:01
still be beneficial to them this is so I
04:05
love to answer this question because if
04:08
you think about your experience as a
04:10
student I I think I understand that you
04:13
were yourself a self-sufficient student
04:15
that didn’t necessarily feel like needed
04:18
extra help but if you think about a
04:21
coach as sort of a partner with you and
04:24
your experience I’m
04:26
that you had people that you had support
04:30
you in various ways while you were in
04:32
school even if it wasn’t a student
04:33
success coach somebody that you could
04:36
talk to you about oh this is how I’m
04:37
feeling right now or have you you know
04:40
somebody else that maybe you’re going to
04:41
school with who you’re you’re sharing
04:43
your experiences or have you done this
04:45
or what have you done in this situation
04:47
you think about it you think about the
04:50
experience of everybody wants to feel
04:52
validated and everybody wants to feel
04:55
understood and to know that they’re not
04:57
alone and coaching provides some
05:01
community for a student so that they’re
05:04
not alone particularly when you’re
05:05
online and you can feel disconnected and
05:08
you don’t necessarily know what you
05:09
don’t know and we do have a lot of
05:12
students who are self sufficient and
05:14
confident and they do you know really
05:16
well but isn’t it nice to hear someone
05:18
say you’re doing so awesome good job
05:20
keep doing it you know so there’s a lot
05:22
of value in having a coach even if you
05:24
don’t necessarily need them to point out
05:27
something you’re doing wrong or that you
05:28
could do better it they can they can be
05:31
there to cheer you on they can be there
05:34
even to just we have somebody that you
05:38
can bounce ideas or things off of it
05:41
never that never hurts to have another
05:43
person not in your corner supporting you
05:45
know um and you know especially because
05:48
our coaches tend to already have had
05:51
this experience themselves and can
05:53
really really offer information to
05:57
students thoughts based on their own
05:59
experience and that’s valuable to
06:01
anybody I’m sure yeah for sure I think
06:03
it sounds like it would be especially
06:05
value valuable for students who maybe
06:09
don’t have as much of a support system I
06:13
mean everyone has their family they may
06:15
happen or their friends that but their
06:17
friends may not be going to the same
06:19
school so they may not understand or
06:22
even if someone their parents haven’t
06:24
been to college and they are a
06:26
first-time student they can be totally
06:29
self-sufficient be doing great but it’s
06:30
still nice to have that support or if
06:33
your parents say did get their degrees
06:36
but they were in a different field like
06:39
I know I decree
06:40
writing but my parents are very
06:41
science-based so a lot of times I
06:43
couldn’t really talk to them about what
06:46
my program was because while they’re
06:48
supporting me they don’t really
06:49
understand where I’m coming from
06:51
so I think it sounds like a success code
06:53
should be useful in cases like that
06:54
a success coach is useful in in any way
06:59
that that a lot of ways that you can
07:01
even imagine because everybody’s
07:03
situation is unique so something that a
07:06
success coach brings to any interaction
07:09
is that they they come into it neutral
07:12
with no preconceived notions about this
07:15
person what they should be accomplishing
07:17
what they should be doing this is a
07:19
third party which is the oftentimes like
07:22
someone will even see like a life coach
07:23
or a counselor just somebody to be part
07:26
of the experience that is just there for
07:29
them in a space where this they’re
07:33
completely open to hearing where this
07:36
person is coming from and what they need
07:38
and being able to ask the right
07:40
questions to help the student think
07:43
through things that maybe they haven’t
07:45
thought through before or or just
07:49
challenges them to think in different
07:50
ways even if you do have a support
07:52
system most of the time those are people
07:56
that know you already or they’re coming
07:58
in from their own experience of you or
08:00
from their own experience of themselves
08:02
in school so it is nice to have that
08:05
person who’s a little bit more objective
08:06
that will bring up things that given the
08:11
student a different perspective and even
08:13
if you don’t necessarily need a coach
08:16
now it’s still good to establish a
08:18
relationship with your coach and at
08:20
least know who that person is and have
08:24
some check-ins or that dosnt coaching
08:28
doesn’t have to be really intense
08:30
coaching sessions it can really just be
08:32
you know quick this is what’s going on
08:34
with me do you have anything to add that
08:37
could potentially be helpful or that I’m
08:39
not thinking of it could be you know
08:40
just quick things like that but even if
08:43
you don’t feel like you need one know
08:44
you don’t know for sure what will come
08:46
up and if you might need more in the
08:48
future so it’s great to establish that
08:50
and have it there if you need more
08:52
intense help somewhere
08:53
the line that’s great that’s so valuable
08:57
can you tell us a little bit from the
09:00
success coach perspective what makes a
09:03
really great success coach mm-hmm I
09:07
found that the best success coaches are
09:12
coming from a background of they want to
09:15
be of service to others and a lot of
09:19
them have come into being a success
09:21
coach because they were in a situation
09:25
themselves as students where they don’t
09:29
want other students to have to face what
09:30
they face that’s exactly how I came to
09:33
become a success coach many years back
09:37
and how I’ve kind of evolved in my
09:38
career over time I didn’t start out
09:40
thinking I was gonna be a success coach
09:42
when I started going to college but my
09:45
experiences as a non-traditional student
09:47
trying to fit school in and just those
09:50
feelings of despair of like this is ever
09:52
going to end am I ever gonna actually do
09:54
this I had a I had a success coach and
09:58
realized that it wasn’t until I had my
10:00
success coach about eight years into my
10:02
education that I really finally got some
10:06
traction and finished and most of our
10:09
success at coaches come from experiences
10:12
like that where somebody made a
10:13
difference to them and they want to pass
10:15
it on so the best success coaches are
10:18
very student centric focused they have
10:20
empathy they a lot of times come from
10:24
backgrounds of counseling or some type
10:30
of coaching background where they
10:31
already understand the idea behind that
10:33
there’s a difference between advising
10:36
and coaching so advising is more of the
10:39
what this is what you need to do and as
10:41
coaches what we do is okay how how does
10:44
that look for you you have your plan you
10:47
have your classes you know what you’re
10:49
supposed to do but that doesn’t
10:51
necessarily mean you know how to do it
10:53
so
10:53
coaches think from a perspective of okay
10:56
here is the information and the facts
10:59
what you know helping people look at
11:02
what does this look like for you and so
11:04
coaches really need to be very open and
11:06
like
11:07
had said previously coaches really our
11:10
objective they’re not thinking they’re
11:13
not bringing themselves into it unless
11:15
there’s unless they’re relating to the
11:17
student in some way so the student feels
11:19
like yeah I’ve been there and I
11:21
empathize with where you’re coming from
11:22
but really coaches are great listeners
11:26
empathetic want to help and and good at
11:31
asking questions listening well to ask
11:34
the right questions so that the student
11:36
can we can think through the right path
11:41
for themselves that’s great and it’s so
11:43
great that we have coaches like that
11:45
here at UCF who can listen can hear what
11:50
you’re going through or can make you
11:51
feel better saying I’ve been there
11:53
before that’s so valuable mm-hmm can you
11:58
tell us what your favorite part of your
12:01
job is being the director of student
12:03
coaching I’m so passionate about student
12:08
success coaching the value of I don’t
12:13
know if everybody understands how
12:15
valuable it is to have have a service
12:20
that people pay for you know life
12:22
coaching that helps people prioritize
12:24
and organize and set goals to accomplish
12:27
the things that they want to accomplish
12:28
in their life we’re essentially doing
12:30
that in in the in the form of offering
12:34
that to students so that they can set
12:36
goals prioritize engage well with the
12:39
material that they’re learning so that
12:41
they can be the best student as possible
12:43
and the whole idea behind that is not
12:46
that you get your degree but that what
12:49
are you going to do with it when you
12:51
when you finish what are you gonna
12:52
contribute to the community in the world
12:55
when you’re done so I feel like coaching
12:58
is really helping people learn how to be
13:00
the best version of themselves not just
13:02
finish a degree but actually like really
13:05
embrace okay this is what it means to be
13:08
better in to plan better and to you know
13:12
persist and and you you know develop
13:15
gritty grittiness that helps me you know
13:18
get through other challenges and like
13:20
not just school I mean learning how to
13:22
do school successfully is learning how
13:25
to do life successfully so I just love
13:28
in my job that I’m able to help people
13:31
learn and I love coaching my coaches and
13:34
having them feel inspired like I am to
13:38
help students feel inspired that this is
13:41
not the end-all be-all your degree it’s
13:44
this is what you’re doing here in the
13:46
experience that you have is gonna impact
13:48
the person that you become later so I
13:50
guess that’s just my favorite part is
13:53
just I am passionate about what we do
13:56
and I’m passionate about the the impact
13:59
that it can make on people and that is
14:01
exciting to me so it seems like success
14:06
coaching is something that can just be a
14:08
really valuable asset even if you think
14:10
you might not necessarily need it you
14:13
should maybe trick go ahead and reach
14:16
out to your success coach they may be a
14:18
lot more valuable than you think mm-hmm
14:21
that when you’re coming into it they
14:23
have a lot to offer you mm-hmm I
14:25
encourage everybody to reach out and if
14:27
nothing else we’re very friendly and can
14:29
help guide you to other tools and
14:31
resources that you could also find
14:32
beneficial as well a side compass
14:34
coaching thank you so much for being
14:37
with us today and for representing the
14:41
UC app online connect centered
14:43
absolutely thank you very much thank you
