00:08
my name is Melanie toribio and I’m a
00:11
success coach for the UCF online connect
00:14
Center I’m joined today by UCF online
00:17
student Dasha Thompson and we’re going
00:19
to dive into a bit of conversation about
00:21
what it’s like to be a UCF online night
00:24
so let’s get started thank you for
00:27
having me yeah of course so could you
00:30
start by telling me a little bit about
00:32
yourself your name where you’re located
00:35
your program and your graduating class
00:38
yeah so my name is are Joshua Thompson I
00:41
was actually born and raised in Orlando
00:43
so UCF was always going to be my number
00:46
one choice my major was health service
00:49
administration and I worked closely with
00:52
Jennifer with my time with you SIA
00:56
excellent and what drove you to want to
01:00
complete a bachelor’s degree I always
01:04
wanted to go to medical school and
01:05
become a doctor but aside from just
01:08
learning the clinical aspect of medicine
01:10
I also wanted to learn the
01:12
administrative side of medicine because
01:15
I hope to one day maybe try to change
01:18
some policies and create a better system
01:21
that works for our healthcare system so
01:24
we can improve it and be more up-to-date
01:27
with other countries such as like the
01:29
United Kingdom or Canada I just want to
01:32
improve our health care system and the
01:34
way that we practice medicine here in
01:36
the United States excellent such a
01:38
relevant topic today but what why did
01:44
you choose online learning as your
01:46
preferred method for degree completion
01:48
well I had to work full time in order to
01:52
support myself and you know I had to
01:55
have a job so UCF online was perfect for
01:58
me because it was very flexible and I it
02:01
worked really well with my schedule I
02:02
was able to work full time like usual
02:04
but I was also able to complete all the
02:06
courses I needed on time to graduate
02:09
with UCF I said it offered a lot
02:13
flexibility than the face-to-face
02:15
classes exactly what what has your
02:17
experience with your online classes been
02:20
like so far the the experience has been
02:23
amazing all my teachers were very
02:26
helpful they were all anytime I had a
02:29
question or if I was a bit confused for
02:31
anything
02:31
they were always able to respond back
02:34
immediately
02:35
aside from that there’s a lot of
02:37
features on the online course such as
02:40
like the calendar feature where if you
02:42
have any assignments or if you don’t
02:45
know when things are due it tells you
02:46
exactly what things are due and that was
02:48
probably the most helpful for me I never
02:50
missed any assignment because of that
02:52
feature there’s just a bunch of ways to
02:55
always keep in communication with your
02:57
professors so although you can’t see
03:00
them face to face you can always call
03:02
them you can email them sometimes
03:04
they’ll even Skype with you if necessary
03:06
so it was it didn’t really seem like a
03:09
difference from any campus
03:11
situation for me yeah those are all
03:14
really helpful tools that you were able
03:16
to utilize through canvas what are some
03:19
additional tips that you’d like to share
03:21
or give to anyone who’s currently
03:25
learning online some recommendations I
03:28
have is to always just reach out to a
03:31
professor if you have any questions or
03:33
anything they are there to help you they
03:36
want to see you succeed so as long as
03:38
you reach out to them and utilize that
03:40
resource you will do as well if you want
03:43
to do as I mentioned before just try to
03:46
use that calendar feature because it
03:49
always will just keep you up to date
03:50
with all your assignments so you’ll
03:52
never miss an assignment or you’ll never
03:55
wait to the last minute to try to
03:57
complete assignment it tells you your
03:59
entire semester of assignments so you
04:01
can even work ahead if you would like
04:03
and that was probably like the greatest
04:05
feature for me that contributed to my
04:07
success with the UCF yeah I’m sure
04:09
especially with online classes where you
04:11
are given a lot more flexibility um
04:15
self-discipline time management those
04:17
are all really important things to that
04:19
factor into to your success as a student
04:22
do you have any advice for students
04:25
applying to UCF online
04:27
yeah I would definitely say is figure
04:31
out the best schedule for you and then
04:34
just pick classes according to that so
04:36
if you know that you work all day and
04:38
maybe you only have a couple hours after
04:41
work
04:42
don’t make I wouldn’t choose maybe like
04:45
four or five classes maybe just choose
04:47
one or two classes just to see if you
04:49
can do that because it takes a lot of
04:53
self-discipline for online learning it’s
04:56
not like you go to class and the teacher
04:57
tells you you need to do this on this
04:59
day it definitely take you have to take
05:01
it upon yourself to really want to do
05:04
the work and so definitely just create a
05:07
schedule for yourself and as I mentioned
05:11
before definitely if you have any
05:12
questions or any concerns just
05:14
definitely just try to reach out to an
05:15
advisor or a teacher so that they can
05:17
help you succeed because we all want to
05:19
see your success it’s good to ease your
05:23
way in to things rather than overload
05:25
yourself and not having enough time to
05:28
manage all of the the different
05:31
commitments now we’re gonna shift into
05:34
some more questions regarding your
05:36
relationship with your success coach so
05:39
what were your initial thoughts on
05:41
coaching I that is a great question I
05:46
was never used to coaching I know that
05:49
you have an academic advisor where you
05:52
can reach out to them if you had any
05:54
questions so for me having good coach
05:56
was almost like having two academic
05:58
advisors because if academically I could
06:01
reach out to my advisor but if I had any
06:03
questions about the program or any
06:05
questions about anything in general
06:07
Jennifer my coach was always really
06:09
there for me she always emailed me she
06:12
always called we made monthly meetings
06:16
just to discuss where I was my future
06:19
goals
06:19
if classes were going as expected so I
06:22
thought coaching was was really good
06:25
because Jennifer always checked in on me
06:27
and she just wanted to make sure that
06:29
everything was going as well as I hoped
06:32
and fortunately it did go well so it’s
06:35
that additional layer of support
06:38
great and what how do you feel that the
06:44
relationship with Jennifer on with your
06:46
success coach has impacted your
06:48
experience here at UCF I personally
06:52
think that my relationship with Jennifer
06:55
since we worked together though it
06:58
really improved my my coursework with
07:02
UCF because I felt that Jennifer also
07:05
kind of kept me accountable for all the
07:09
decisions that I made if I ever had any
07:12
questions as far as like maybe even
07:15
graduate school which I did get accepted
07:17
to Jennifer would like help me she would
07:20
say like oh try to find funding or like
07:23
what are the criteria so Jennifer was
07:25
was definitely a huge support system for
07:28
me as I maneuvered through this the
07:31
courses at UC ER that’s amazing Josh and
07:34
congratulations are you gonna be
07:36
starting in the fall yes yes with LSU
07:40
excellent that’s amazing and could you
07:45
tell me about a time when Jennifer
07:48
influenced your ability to overcome an
07:50
obstacle yes actually it was this
07:54
semester it was it was probably around
07:57
January where I was preparing to take
08:00
for the GRE to get into graduate school
08:02
and so there was there were many
08:04
questions that I didn’t understand about
08:07
that process and because Jennifer had
08:09
went to grad school herself she
08:11
definitely helped me with that she was
08:12
telling me about how to like sign up for
08:15
the GRE and send it to the different
08:17
schools because there were different
08:19
schools that I were had applied to and I
08:22
was interested in and Jennifer also was
08:25
like we talked about she was telling me
08:27
about funding because she said that’s
08:29
important you can find funding ways and
08:31
so just definitely just the process of
08:35
post UCF Jennifer was very very helpful
08:37
she sent me different links and
08:39
different emails to definitely help
08:41
support my dreams of getting into
08:45
graduate school so I’m very grateful for
08:47
her for that hmm it’s not like she was a
08:49
big support system throughout your
08:52
experience here ECF and now applying to
08:55
grad school so that’s amazing
08:58
how would you feel that coaching has
09:02
impacted your personal or professional
09:03
development has it helped you to adapt
09:07
your style in any way as a student yes I
09:12
think it’s helped me adapt because
09:16
Jennifer she she was a form of a mentor
09:20
in a way because like like we discussed
09:24
if I had any questions or if I just
09:27
didn’t understand maybe even not about
09:29
grad school but just about my current
09:32
courses that I was taking Jennifer
09:34
definitely went above and beyond to help
09:36
me
09:37
she was just constantly sending me
09:38
emails or you know calling just to make
09:41
sure that I understood anything and
09:44
Jennifer always asked she’s like do you
09:46
have any questions or is there anything
09:48
I can help clear up for you and that was
09:50
definitely a big relief because
09:52
sometimes we don’t know what’s going on
09:55
or we don’t understand especially if
09:57
you’re transitioning into the online
09:59
system for the first time and so she
10:01
definitely the transition very easy or
10:04
easy for me and yeah it definitely
10:08
changed the way that I look at online
10:10
courses exile well thank you so much for
10:13
sharing that thank you so much for
10:15
joining me in this conversation today
10:17
and for being a part of UCF and for
10:21
representing UCF online so well thank
10:25
you thank you so much
